The Turbo Obelisk clone variety group comprises several clones with complementary traits ranging from superior limestone tolerance to higher nectar yield, growth rate differences, and branching patterns providing robust performance across diverse sites.
Soil requirements
The following minimum requirements are necessary for the ‘Turbo Obelisk’ Black Locust to prosper (the values are given for the top 1 meter layer of the soil):
- Minimum 300+ mm rain, or water through an irrigation system.
- pH not higher than 8,5-9
- Total salt content (salinity) not more than 0,05%
- CaCO3 content not over 15%
- Ground water should not be too high
- Ideal utilization from (not too cold) continental environments to subtropical
- and tropical dry broadleaf forests!
- Potential utilization in desert areas with irrigation!
Planting proposal and expectations:
- 1000-1100 saplings per hectare, planting
- spacing of eg. 3 x 3 m
- Short rotation period (on average Hungarian soil): 14-16 years
- Expected yield: 400-500 m3/ha
- 70% industrial wood
- 1 thinning before clear-cut
- Special cultivation technologies
Quality of Wood Output
- Straight, defect-free shipmast-type stems suitable for construction-grade timber.
- Fast-growing hardwood tree that is in demand as a viable alternative to tropical hardwoods.
- Outstanding technical characteristics, high natural durability and often a decorative appearance.
- The heartwood has high natural resistance against wood destructive fungi and insects.
- Weight (fresh): – 930 kg/m³
- Weight (kiln dried): 0,66 – 0,79 g/cm³
- Compression strength*: 55 – 75 N/mm²
- Bending strength* : 120 – 160 N/mm²
- Impact resistance*: 110 – 210 kJ/m²
- *air dried (12-15% wood moisture)
